Brunner fireplaces
Permanent exhibition

Firerplaces at Direktorenhaus
Since December 2011 we are proud to see 7 brand new fireplaces every day
at Direktorenhaus.
Why that?
The idea in regards to the exhibition of a new culture binding fire and warmth
sprung out of a pragmatic call of the winter: the old house on the spree, which is part of the old mint coin, does not possess a heating system - the past winters have been too cold.

labyrinth-like mountain passages that are populated by the...se strange figures. The belly of the mountain should not be seen as a strict anithesis to the society above, but as it's hidden internal structure.

Just in time for the heyday of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the southern big-city-carnival also finds its way into the Direktorenhaus: Young American artists bring the culture from New Orleans (NoLa) to Berlin. According to the southern metropolis, the works are colorful, flashy and over all full of the joys of life! For one month, Direktorenhaus shows a cross section of exciting contemporary
works on the topic of New Orleans. In this city, being entwined by legends, whose various cultural influences always have inspired artists of different genres, an especially lively art scene has emerged during the last years. The group exhibition shows how the present New Orleans’ culture is appealing to a new generation of artists.
Hans van Bentem at Direktorenhaus
Hans van Bentem at Direktorenhaus
16.11.10
There are two prevailing themes in Hans van Bentem’s sculptures: the unexpected and the grand. The Dutch artist reinterprets precious materials like glass and porcelain, which are traditionally used for the most exquisite crafts.
While the material and the decorative elements of his delicate sculptures and swanky chandeliers remind of the abundance of the Rococo era, their style and topics draw their inspiration from Manga, art history and general cheekiness.

Peter Nencini at Direktorenhaus "By, With and Of"
11.11.10
The first of a little series of posts on the exhibition now at Direktorenhaus, Berlin. The title, 'By, With and Of', comes from the wonderful book Occasional Work and Seven Walks from the Office for Soft Architecture by Canadian poet Lisa Robertson.
Taken from a chapter on Eugène Atget's photographs of everyday Parisian interiors, thus: "An item of furniture is a kind of preposition. 'By', 'with' and 'of' are material intuitions. 'Of' is a cupboard. 'With' is a table. 'By' is a chair'.

In the moment of studying the set of found chairs for Direktorenhaus. In the context of an exhibition, I want the treatments to be functional but then to exchange information concretely with the spaces and to carry through a narrative staked out in the previous post.
This is a stage of unpacking the stool's structural character. A lot of measuring and handling and drawing. Here too, adding found pieces which sit naturally in existent apertures or that echo and offset what is already there.

Bernie Lubell: Conservation of Intimacy
Bernie Lubell: Conservation of Intimacy
15.07.10
Lubell’s Conservation of Intimacy serves as a stage where people are invited to touch and play with the work—an unlikely, but thrilling, proposition in the context of the “do not touch” policy in the gallery and museum environment. As participants crank, rock, and create sounds with the
work, they tap into what the artist describes as the “vast reservoir of knowledge stored in each of our bodies,” and become important collaborators in the realization and understanding of this massive installation.

As a complement to the design installations from Studio Gorm which play with the simple practicalities of the kitchen, a group of artists will transform the rooms adjacent to Studio Gorm with food related installations of a more surreal kind. Taking the style and functionality of these official spaces and turning it on its head, each
installation will stand for one night only. Here design function is reversed, space is temporarily redefined, a new and very temporary liminal space will be created in the elegant upper rooms of the Direktionhaus.
