GRAPPA IS.... a wonderful way to end a meal, drunk either as a shot on its own or with an espresso (known in Italy as a caffè corretto, or a "corrected coffee"). There is also an after-dinner tradition in the Veneto called the "resentin" which literally means "rinsing" the leftover dregs and foam in your just-finished coffee cup with a little grappa. Grappa is also perfect mixed in a cocktail or used as an ingredient when cooking.
GRAPPA IS MADE FROM....the residues of grapes grown and vinified in Italy. The distillation too must take place in Italian distilleries that meet specific national and EU requirements.
Grappa is a very Italian drink; since 1989 the EU has protected the name, which means the drink can only be called grappa if it's sourced and produced in Italy.Grappa can be made from a mixture of pomaces from different sources, or from one grape variety.
If at least 85 per cent of the pomace comes from a single variety, the grappa can be designated di vitigno, and the type of grape can be incorporated into the drink’s name, such as Grappa di Amarone, Grappa di Prosecco, Grappa di Brunello, etc.
