Roeland Otten – ABChairs

Designer Roeland Otten is a provoker and an innovator, never shy of looking for new ways to tell a story and make a statement. He takes a ‘conceptual’ approach to different fields of media: from graphic design to new media and video, from product design to architectural installations in public spaces.
Otten currently presents ABChairs, letter chairs and stools that can be formed into words. Roeland Otten about this concept: "The idea of ABChairs actually originated two years ago from a proposal for seating in a semi-public park.
It would give 'sitting in the park' an extra dimension, namely the possibility for visitors to form new words and texts."
In order to design the series of letter chairs within a new consistent font, Otten has drawn inspiration from Dutch modernist Gerrit Rietveld (the 'Z' chair resembling Rietveld's zigzag chair), and from graphic designer Wim Crouwel, who experimented with 3D letterforms in the nineteen sixties and seventies.
