Samuel Wilkinson

Samuel Wilkinson is an award-winning London-based industrial designer who set up his diverse design studio in 2007 and just a year later completed his largest work, co-designing L’arbre de Flonville in Lausanne, Switzerland. More recently the Plumen 001 light bulb has won great acclaim including collecting the London Design Museum Design of the Year 2011 and the coveted D&AD Black Pencil. 

Wilkinson’s studio work diversifies across various disciplines from consumer products to public realm. Samuel Wilkinson’s commitment and enthusiasm to designing interesting objects and spaces is apparent in his work, always looking to add a fresh dynamic approach in either form or function.

Hoof Tables

The main inspiration for the Hoof tables starts from the foot detail. I have always loved the painted wooden chairs that have the end of the legs left as natural wood so that the paint doesn’t chip off if kicked or knocked. The leg ends of the table are sharpened at the foot – like a horse’s hoof is trimmed before it is shod. 

This detail has derived from continuous exploration and development of production techniques.  The fine edge of the tables is created from the soft chamfer which is cut into the top and bottom of the surface. This also gives the tables a tactile feel and clearly shows solid wood construction. 

Vessel Chandelier

The two Vessel Chandeliers, one with horizontal cut glass and one with angled cut glass, contain 7 individual lamp components. 6 clear glass shades surround one coloured version in the centre. The Vessel lamp consists of a blown glass form designed specifically to celebrate and compliment the Plumen 001 low energy light bulb. 

When illuminated the glass tint mutes the light without hiding the form and produces an unexpected irregular reflection that appears holographic.
