From the 21th of April until the 25th of May the Direktorenhaus presents 'Unter Tage' the new solo exhibition from Tina Winkhaus.
The artist has quit her familiar surroundings and ventured to the underworld. The 14 large-format photographs offer an entrance into the clandestine, labyrinth-like mountain passages that are populated by these strange figures. The belly of the mountain should not be seen as a strict anithesis to the society above, but as it's hidden internal structure.
On view are dubious scenes enacted in meagre and bleak settings, wanton and morbid. The squinting observer is not sure if he understands the sinfulness and homelessness of humankind. How could he. Yet, as he stumbles onwards through the mineshaft, he finally notices what Tina has produced are actually no longer photographs.
Due to the Berlin-based artists mastery of her technique over the years, these works appear almost painterly. In a painstaking production process, she combines countless individual images, all taken beforehand, into one complex photo tableaux. The viewer is hardly able to defy the pull of this opulent image-world that reminds him of the old masters of Renaissance and Baroque paintings.
