On October 14th the Opening of the Illustrative 2016 took place at the Direktorenhaus. The eighth edition of Illustrative in Berlin shows 32 appreciated illustrators and graphics from different countries. More than 500 guests joined us for the Opening of the festival. Artists, collectors, galerists, visitors and agencys had the chance to discover new trends and young talents, to exchange opinions and to admire the unique art of illustration.

The curatorship of the Direktorenhaus developed the Illustrative further crucially: from a festival to a museum show. The Illustrative possesses a worldwide unique collection of illustrative art that came into being in the last 10 years. A critical observation of the art museum practice to show only “pure” arts, led to giving illustration – as one of the most important applied arts – an appropriate platform and opening them to the museum space. Years ago, terms like illustration and liberal arts were strong opposites – but not in past times. In the Bauhaus-era, artists like Lyonel Feininger oscillted between the worlds of art and craft. The Direktorenhaus shows with this year’s exhibition how close illustration and the artistic avantgarde are connected.
